John Skorich, Iron Range native and a highly decorated Marine pilot who served in Korea, had a unique experience in 1949 when he served as a guard on the “Freedom Train”.
From 1947 to 1949, a seven-car train traveled the United States carrying some of the United States’ most priceless historic documents related to the founding and establishment of the US. The mission of the train was to allow everyone to see these historic documents in person. Skorich told his family how exceptional the experience was for him, even though he initially didn’t have high expectations for the assignment.
Skorich went on after the Freedom Train assignment to have an exceptional career as a pilot in the Korean War. He died in 1959 as the result of a plane crash in the US. More than 3.5 million Americans came to view the documents.
